Cultural Fire Credits are a trading mechanism developed by the Firesticks Alliance Indigenous Corporation in collaboration with the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation (AbCF). The project enables and encourages the inclusion of Indigenous-led, sustainably financed Cultural Burning practices throughout Australia’s carbon trading markets.
The AbCF and Firesticks use the term ‘cultural burning’ to describe burning practices developed by Aboriginal people to enhance the health of the land and people. Cultural burning can include burning, or the prevention of burning of Country, for the health of particular plants (e.g. native grasses, black grevillea) and animals (e.g. emu, potoroo), bushfoods, threatened species, and biodiversity in general. It often involves, but is not limited to patch burning and creates different fire intervals or tiled features across a given landscape.
Cultural Fire Credits allow investors to support Indigenous community-led cultural fire programs, in addition to mentoring the next generation of Cultural Fire Practitioners to ensure the continuation of both cultural knowledge and practices. Buying a Cultural Fire Credit actively strengthens Indigenous-led and implemented projects which engage the wider community and deliver equitable benefits for both corporations, organisations and communities alike. The project program brings together an extensive network of experience and expertise in Indigenous knowledge systems and the contemporary nuances of the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) voluntary market.
