Returning & Managing Country is an annual guide published by the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation which highlights the activities funded by their grant program supporting First Nations led projects and organisations.
Returning and Managing Country is the highest profile activity for the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation, and a cornerstone in their work redressing Australia’s historic dispossession of Indigenous people through the restoration of an Indigenous land and water management. The program prioritises supporting projects which enable the acquisition of Indigenous land, or empower preexisting Indigenous titleholders to deliver projects directly benefiting First Nations peoples and communities.
The 2021 - 2022 overview of the program provides a snapshot of its funded partners, and insights into the diverse range of projects supported over the year through a selection of case studies. Case studies range from land management projects delivering bush foods, cultural burning practices and carbon sequestration schemes, each cultivating First Nations expertise, sciences and approaches to environmental management. The overview provides one of the most comprehensive registries of active First Nations led projects, demonstrating how the return of and to Country can lay the foundation for positive change for both Indigenous and non Indigenous alike communities.
